Machine embroidery thread is the decorative upper thread. It is not automatically the right thread for the bobbin, a structural garment seam or an overlocker. The most useful first decision is fibre: polyester and rayon/viscose can both make beautiful motifs, but they differ in feel, lustre and care profile. A precise recommendation also depends on the design's stitch density, fabric, stabiliser and your machine manual.
Polyester versus rayon/viscose
Polyester embroidery thread is a pragmatic first choice for children's clothes, everyday bags, uniforms or other frequently laundered items. That does not mean the whole embroidered item can be washed at the thread's laboratory-test temperature: follow the fabric, backing and garment care label.
Rayon (viscose) embroidery thread is valued for its soft, glossy surface. Madeira describes its Classic/Rayon No. 40 as a standard-weight viscose embroidery thread. It is attractive for decorative motifs and display textiles where sheen is a priority. Check the care instructions for the specific thread and fabric; do not assume the polyester test ratings apply to viscose.
The number “40” describes a thread-weight family, not a guarantee that every manufacturer's thread has identical thickness or needle requirements. Test each change of brand or fibre on a scrap.

Check the whole thread path
Use an embroidery needle size and type approved by the machine maker for the chosen thread and cloth. Madeira's technical data gives a needle range for Polyneon 40, but a domestic machine manual may narrow the usable options. Fit the correct spool cap or stand so thread unwinds smoothly; caught thread at the spool notch can appear to be a tension problem. Use the machine maker's recommended bobbin-thread weight and bobbin type rather than automatically winding the decorative top thread below. Wind and insert bobbins correctly, then sew a small test motif with the real fabric, stabiliser and hooping method.
If threads break, check the needle, path, spool feed and design density before assuming a different brand will fix it. If the fabric puckers, follow the puckering diagnosis first.

If you need one monogram colour, buy a single matching spool. If you stitch large repeat designs, a few larger spools in frequently used colours may be more sensible than many shades you will never finish.
